Cuba: Summer Camp Rebuild

Cuba: Summer Camp Rebuild

Date: May 21 – May 28, 2017

Cost: Flight and in-country costs, TBD.

Work to be Accomplished: Michael and a team are assisting locals to rebuild a Summer Youth Camp destroyed by Hurricane Matthew. They’re looking to add a few more people with a good heart, who love to do good and have some construction skills. This is a “vacation with a purpose” trip at a very economic cost. Let Michael know below if you are interested.

Skill Requirements: Specifically, we are looking for volunteers to help with the immediate cleanup and rebuilding of the summer youth camp.

Special Requirements: Discretion will be used as to which jobs people can perform.

Texas: Flooding

Texas: Flooding

Volunteers have been requested by CGR partners in Texas to assist in mudouts, house cleaning, and disaster response as a response to historic rainfall in the area.

Date: Immediately, with mudout teams being needed.

Cost: Free apart from transportation. Teams will coordinate with other volunteers in Texas through US partners.

Work to be Accomplished: Volunteers will be trained and activated as reinforcements for mudout teams working in cleaning and restoring flooded houses.

Skill Requirements: Volunteers may or may not have mudout and disaster response training. Training will be provided on-site when they arrive.

China: Seniors Project Assessment

China: Seniors Project Assessment

Date: Fall or Winter 2016

Cost: Transportation to and from China. Food and accommodation costs TBD on team size. Translation costs dependent on team personnel.

Work to be Accomplished: CGR will deploy a group of senior volunteers who are passionate about the needs among seniors citizens in rural areas of China. This team will further investigate the needs as an initial assessment and verification.

Skill Requirements: Community background development desirable but not necessary as there are different team roles available.

Special Requirements: None.

Northern Iraq: Medical Relief Teams

Northern Iraq: Medical Relief Teams

Date: Anytime 2016

Cost: Transportation to and from Kurdistan, Iraq. $20 per day for food, and accommodation ranges from $50-100 per night. Transportation and translation costs dependent on team personnel.

Work to be Accomplished: Volunteers have been requested via our local partners to assist refugees that are internally or externally displaced.

Skill Requirements: Medical background desirable but not necessary as there are assistant roles available.

Special Requirements: Must be 18 and older.

Date: Anytime 2016

Cost: Transportation to and from Athens, Greece. Food and accommodation cost changes dependent on group size, yet individuals are still encouraged to apply. Transportation and translation costs dependent on team personnel.

Work to be Accomplished: Volunteers have been requested via our local partners to assist refugees that are internally or externally displaced.

Skill Requirements: Medical background desirable but not necessary. Strong interpersonal skills.

Special Requirements: Must be 18 and older.

Nepal: Earthquake Recovery

Nepal: Earthquake Recovery

Volunteers have been requested to help in the rebuild process in the cities devastated by earthquakes in 2014-15 in Nepal.

Date: Summer 2016

Cost: $500 plus airfare.

Work to be Accomplished: Rebuilding and/or repairing basic structures and houses primarily for the elderly, single moms, or individuals with disabilities. Volunteers may also participate in the demolition and reconstruction of school classrooms.

Skill Requirements: Knowledge of demolition of unstable buildings and removal of concrete rubble. Salvaging material such as tin sheets and windows, if possble; developing a plan for the reconstruction of homes or classrooms and begin rebuilding/repairing. Masonry skills, carpentry skills and electrical wiring knowledge will be useful. Building relationships with those we are serving in the community is very important and time should be spent developing these relationships.

Living Environment: Small hotel or rental house.

Special Considerations: This is a hot, humid tropical island location only 9 degrees north of the equator. Individuals involved need to be physically fit and able to handle the tropical heat. The sun is very intense during summer months. Caution: drink only bottle/mineral/purified water. Malaria is rare.

Long Island, NY: Hurricane Sandy Rebuild

Long Island, NY: Hurricane Sandy Rebuild

Date: Anytime 2016

Cost: Transportation to and from New York, $20 per day for food and accommodation, and a $20 non-refundable deposit.

Work to be Accomplished: Volunteers have been requested to assist residents in Long Island as they continue to rebuild their homes from the damage left behind by Superstorm Sandy.

Skill Requirements: Ability to work longs hours, various construction skills.

Special Requirements: Must be 18 and older. Volunteers will stay in dormitory-style housing in New York Institute of Technology.

Disaster Relief Mobile App: Project90

Disaster Relief Mobile App: Project90

Date: Ongoing

Cost: None

Work to be Accomplished: A University of Calgary student club has been creating a mobile app to be used in disaster relief situations. The team is looking for volunteers to assist in preparing manuals for mobile display, creating explanatory and infographics, coding, and testing.

Skill Requirements: Graphic design or coding is an asset but not necessary.

Special Requirements: Volunteers can collaborate online as distance is not a problem to complete tasks.
